This handbook to the "Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults" (RCIA), written by a renowned religious educator and theologian, invites converts, the clergy, and all those engaged in the catechumenal process to appreciate anew the richness of the Catholic faith. Regis Duffy articulates the requirements for becoming and remaining a full Christian committed to gospel values on every level of life to the building of the Kingdom of God. On Becoming a Catholic is a complete introduction to the essentials of the catechumenal process and clearly relates what the church teaches to its members. Duffy's exposition stresses: - The theology of the Cross as the root of all Christian conversion and formation, and its meaning for individual Christians and parish life - The Word of God as prophetic Word in parish, familial, and personal lives: learning to "recognize" the Lord in unexpected places of our lives and world, and nurture openness and responsiveness to the Word - How to live and act as one marked by the Cross and the Word of God: participating in a conversion process that profoundly changes our priorities, values, lifestyle, and -- most importantly -- our involvement in worship and sacraments - What it means to be a Christian community: discovering the meaning of the Liturgical Year and the Church's role as teacher - The value of Lenten observance, the meaning of Good Friday, and the centrality of the Easter event as basis for a practical theology of our redemptive need and God's enduring response - How honest Eucharistic participation embodies a renewed sense of personal commitment to Christ and sense of mission and ministry in the community.

Comedy is how we cope with the absurdity of life. The person who cannot step back and see how ludicrous are most of the things we encounter in life is the person who gets mired and engulfed in them. Comedy lets us step back and see the whole picture. It reminds us of what is really important which certainly includes laughing and laughing often. These four comedies each take on several situations but exaggerate them until they become enlarged and laughable. To each are added an unusual use of standard theatrical tradition. A writer of one play becomes involved with his own characters. Another play actually moves backwards in time. Another comedy is actually two separate plays that come together while another claims to be a musical but has no singing whatsoever. Come along for the fun and laughter and lighten your burdens for a while.

A radical reinterpretation of three controversial works that illuminate racism and national identity in the United States Citizenship on Catfish Row focuses on three seminal works in the history of American culture: the first full-length narrative film, D. W. Griffith's The Birth of a Nation; the first integrated musical, Oscar Hammerstein and Jerome Kern's Showboat; and the first great American opera, George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess. Each of these works sought to make a statement about American identity in the form of a narrative, and each included in that narrative a prominent role for Black people. Each work included jarring or discordant elements that pointed to a deeper tension between the kind of stories Americans wish to tell about themselves and the historical and social reality of race. Although all three have been widely criticized, their efforts to connect the concepts of nation and race are not only instructive about the history of the American imagination but also provide unexpected resources for contemporary reflection.

Based on years of research in psychology, science, and the principles of compatibility and chemistry, "Kiss Fewer Frogs" empowers a woman to identify which men are best suited to her and where to find him. Unlike generic dating advice, the core of the book digs deep into seven types of men: "genetypes" of behavior, personality, and character identified by psychologists, scientists, and even spiritual leaders. One of those seven types is invariably likely to be your type and this ground-breaking guide can help you find him. With wit, warmth, and sometimes bold comments, the author also gives women rare insights into the male psyche and takes on topics rarely encountered in similar guides: "Prince Perfect" and revelations designed to shred artificial worldviews The one thing single mothers should avoid Six characteristics of women who attract men Rewriting the dating script for better focus and more control The power of appreciating your age, body and looks Tips on writing better online profiles The "Calls of Nature" for both sexes Woven into this step-by-step guide are stories of real men and women in their search for romance, humorous anecdotes, and reflections on dating relationships that the author overheard "last night at a bar (aka my alternate research lab)." Whether he is sharing how to recognize a "player" with surgical precision or assigning women to write down their deepest relationship fears, Sheridan motivates readers to give love a chance. Imagine having proven strategies to let yourself learn from the past and move forward to the future with greater confidence and trust. If you - or women you know - are ready to take your best shot at identifying compatible men who are serious about finding a life partner, "Kissing Fewer Frogs" will make the search both systematic and fun. The perfect prince doesn't exist, but you may very well discover a prince who's close to perfect for you.

This book explores the threat of Christian conversion to Islam in twelve early modern English plays. In works by Shakespeare, Marlowe, Massinger, and others, conversion from Christianity to Islam is represented as both tragic and erotic, as a fate worse than death and as a sexual seduction. Degenhardt examines the stage's treatment of this intercourse of faiths to reveal connections between sexuality, race, and confessional identity in early modern English drama and culture. In addition, she shows how England's encounter with Islam reanimated post-Reformation debates about the embodiment of Christian faith. As Degenhardt compellingly demonstrates, the erotics of conversion added fuel to the fires of controversies over Pauline universalism, Christian martyrdom, the efficacy of relics and rituals, and even the Knights of Malta.

Beyond the Breath is one of the first books to give a complete overview and description of sensation based vipassana meditation, the form of mediation thought of as the original method of meditation as used by the Buddha 2,500 years ago. This form of meditation, brought to the West by S.N. Geoneka, provides a means to experience emotions directly and nonverbally—accessing the mind through the body. One of the main principles of this school of meditation is that meditation alone is not sufficient practice, but that it must be combined with a whole-life and ethical commitment. M.Glickman's approach is unique—he takes a mediation practice deeply rooted within a historic Buddhist framework, and gives it a modern-day, scientific spin—he presents sensation based viapassana meditaiton and Buddhist principles in 20th-century language, secularizing ideas that may sound exotic, off-putting, or out-dated. Glickman's passion for the topic, as well as his great understanding of Buddhist concepts, make this an inspiring read.
