Description: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the author of The House of the Spirits, this epic novel spanning decades and crossing continents follows two young people as they flee the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War in search of a place to call home. “One of the most richly imagined portrayals of the Spanish Civil War to date, and one of the strongest and most affecting works in [Isabel Allende’s] long career.”—The New York Times Book Review NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY Esquire • Good Housekeeping • Parade In the late 1930s, civil war grips Spain. When General Franco and his Fascists succeed in overthrowing the government, hundreds of thousands are forced to flee in a treacherous journey over the mountains to the French border. Among them is Roser, a pregnant young widow, who finds her life intertwined with that of Victor Dalmau, an army doctor and the brother of her deceased love. In order to survive, the two must unite in a marriage neither of them desires. Together with two thousand other refugees, Roser and Victor embark on the SS Winnipeg, a ship chartered by the poet Pablo Neruda, to Chile: “the long petal of sea and wine and snow.” As unlikely partners, the couple embraces exile as the rest of Europe erupts in world war. Starting over on a new continent, they face trial after trial, but they will also find joy as they patiently await the day when they might go home. Through it all, their hope of returning to Spain keeps them going. Destined to witness the battle between freedom and repression as it plays out across the world, Roser and Victor will find that home might have been closer than they thought all along. A masterful work of historical fiction about hope, exile, and belonging, A Long Petal of the Sea shows Isabel Allende at the height of her powers. Praise for A Long Petal of the Sea “Both an intimate look at the relationship between one man and one woman and an epic story of love, war, family, and the search for home, this gorgeous novel, like all the best novels, transports the reader to another time and place, and also sheds light on the way we live now.”—J. Courtney Sullivan, author of Saints for All Occasions “This is a novel not just for those of us who have been Allende fans for decades, but also for those who are brand-new to her work: What a joy it must be to come upon Allende for the first time. She knows that all stories are love stories, and the greatest love stories are told by time.”—Colum McCann, National Book Award–winning author of Let the Great World Spin

Description: First and foremost, I would like to thank you for reading My book. It is my hope that as you read you will find at least one chapter that speaks to you in such a way that you will want to read it again and again, and perhaps share it with my friends. I have written these chapters primarily for sailors or those interested in sailing. I hope however, that the selections of the points or ideas within this book might be enjoyed by many others who simply have an interest in, and a love for Book. My style is simple and unsophisticated. If you are an acute student of writing who counts syllables and study rhyme and meter, my ideas will probably be a disappointment to you. If, however, you read book simply for enjoyment and relaxation, thenmy book may speak to you in a special way and give you hours of pleasure. For it is this reason I write this book. I like to say my ideas of sailors and my love for sailor is nothing more than a story that rhymes… hopefully! It is my wish that my straight-forward and easy to read style is refreshing, and appeals to your taste. It has been my experience that many times it is helpful to understand what was going on in the sailors or seafarer’s life and mind of the author at the time she was writing such experiences, to better gain an appreciation of the book. With this thought in mind, each idea in the selections of this book will be preceded by a short stories and experiences by me. The commentary will give a short explanation, information, or simply set the mood for the reading. I have also added some short stories, poems about current sail ships adventures in the appendices of this book. It is my hope that the skills, as well as the stories in the appendices will add to your reading pleasure. I should mention at this time that some of my ideas reflect my faith. I think however, that these chapters will be appreciated and definitely not be found to be offensive by those persons of other faiths. It is my deep belief that we are all on our own faith journey and all are deserving of respect and reverence. Consequently, I will never intentionally write anything that would be disrespectful of any religion. As the title of this book indicates, all chapters are about sailors or sailing adventures. Many were simply conjured up from my imagination. Whether the chapters my ideas are grounded in fact or fiction, it is my hope that within these pages you will be carried away from the cares of this world to a land far away. Some of the ideas may make you sad. Some may make you laugh. Others may leave you scratching your head wondering what that was all about. Whatever your reaction, my hope is that you enjoy what you are about to read and consider the following pages my gift to you. Now find a soft comfortable chair. Throw another log on the fire. Get yourself a hot cup of tea. Open the pages of this book and prepare to let your imagination carry you away.

Description: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • This sweeping novel from the author of A Long Petal of the Sea tells the epic story of Violeta Del Valle, a woman whose life spans one hundred years and bears witness to the greatest upheavals of the twentieth century. “An immersive saga about a passion-filled life.”—People ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: PopSugar, Real Simple, Reader’s Digest Violeta comes into the world on a stormy day in 1920, the first girl in a family with five boisterous sons. From the start, her life is marked by extraordinary events, for the ripples of the Great War are still being felt, even as the Spanish flu arrives on the shores of her South American homeland almost at the moment of her birth. Through her father’s prescience, the family will come through that crisis unscathed, only to face a new one as the Great Depression transforms the genteel city life she has known. Her family loses everything and is forced to retreat to a wild and beautiful but remote part of the country. There, she will come of age, and her first suitor will come calling. She tells her story in the form of a letter to someone she loves above all others, recounting times of devastating heartbreak and passionate affairs, poverty and wealth, terrible loss and immense joy. Her life is shaped by some of the most important events of history: the fight for women’s rights, the rise and fall of tyrants, and ultimately not one, but two pandemics. Through the eyes of a woman whose unforgettable passion, determination, and sense of humor carry her through a lifetime of upheaval, Isabel Allende once more brings us an epic that is both fiercely inspiring and deeply emotional.
