Semiotics concepts from a design perspective, offering the foundation for a coherent theory of graphic design as well as conceptual tools for practicing designers. Graphic design has been an academic discipline since the post-World War II era, but it has yet to develop a coherent theoretical foundation. Instead, it proceeds through styles, genres, and imitation, drawing on sources that range from the Bauhaus to deconstructionism. In FireSigns, Steven Skaggs offers the foundation for a semiotic theory of graphic design, exploring semiotic concepts from design and studio art perspectives and offering useful conceptual tools for practicing designers. Semiotics is the study of signs and significations; graphic design creates visual signs meant to create a certain effect in the mind (a “FireSign”). Skaggs provides a network of explicit concepts and terminology for a practice that has made implicit use of semiotics without knowing it. He offers an overview of the metaphysics of visual perception and the notion of visual entities, and, drawing on the pragmatic semiotics of the philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce, looks at visual experience as a product of the action of signs. He introduces three conceptual tools for analyzing works of graphic design—semantic profiles, the functional matrix, and the visual gamut—that allow visual “personality types” to emerge and enable a greater understanding of the range of possibilities for visual elements. Finally, he applies these tools to specific analyses of typography.

More Stoner Comedy From The Firesign Theatre “Profiles in Barbeque Sauce” brings together sixteen of the Firesign Theatre’s stage, recordings and broadcast performance scripts from the earliest years of their long collaboration. From 1967, the Summer of Love-In, to the “Not Insane!” Martian Space Party of 1972, Firesign performed on stage at small clubs and large venue benefit concerts, over AM and FM radio and on the road. “Profiles” collects the group’s timely political satire along with the most surreal, psychedelic and politically incorrect humor from the high times of the “Beatles of Comedy.” “You’ll have a psychic orgasm over Firesign… Their satire is so sharp that it cuts through layers of bullshit in a split second.” —Time Out, London, 12/12/70 “Their purpose in life is to tell you what they aren’t saying.” —UCSB Daily News, 11/24/70

David Ossman’s memoir of The Firesign Theatre’s rapid response to the on-coming Reagan Era recounts the quartet’s uneasy transformation from writer-performer-producers of in-studio comic audio masterpieces to theatrical hopefuls and Movieland script-writers. Firesign goes Hollywood with a million $$ MGM movie deal and a string of big stage shows, featuring all-new hot comedy material, performed at the Roxy, premiere rock-club on the Sunset Strip. Here are Firesign’s new sketches from the “Owl & Octopus Show,” all the words to the full-frontal musical revue “Fighting Clowns,” and the one-act play, “Joey’s House.” Nick Danger, “America’s only detective,” re-appears in three confusing episodes and Old Time Radio fans will also dig “The History of the Art of Radio,” and “The American Pageant,” both of which turn American history over in its grave.

EXORCISM IN YOUR DAILY LIFE The Psychedelic Firesign Theatre At The Magic Mushroom - 1967 by The Firesign Theatre The Firesign Theatre began their long comedy career in 1966 as radio satirists based in Los Angeles. Before their debut LP "Waiting For The Electrician or Someone Like Him" appeared, Firesign began performing together live over the newly-hippified KRLA-AM. Direct from their sold-out broadcast performances in late 1967 at The Magic Mushroom, a popular rock club in Studio City, EXORCISM IN YOUR DAILY LIFE presents ten surreal classics in which the Four Firesigns undertake to play dozens of characters in stoned variations on prison escape movies, whaling sagas, jungle adventures, Roman epics, Sherlock Holmes, King Arthur and Ali Baba along with "educational" films and a day in the life of your TV set. Tokes and jokes take the four or five crazy guys a little higher by the end of every show. Some said Firesign itself was a new psychedelic drug! "The Firesign Theatre is a legal, if not quite natural, high." - Lew Segal, Entertainment World.

In the middle section Wallace shares the pilot episode which reveals an idea of how to use genies and wishes to improve humankind. Then a rock and roll romantic comedy about curiously unknown and questionable parentage And the story of two psychoanalysts intent on fulfilling their continuing medical education accreditation. Part three reveals a time travel tale concerning a father and son. Also a comic one act play continuation about a free lance writer, and song lyrics to a new song titled Georgia Dawn. “How quickly we forget! Not so many decades ago, we were all listening to Vaughn Meader’s First Family album, Steve Martin on LP, or Columbia’s I Can Hear It Now. Alas, spoken word records, like so many aspects of phonography, have been relegated to garage sales and footnotes. Finally, thanks to Jacob Smith’s Spoken Word, this important form of entertainment and culture is receiving the attention it so richly deserves.” —Rick Altman, author of Silent Film Sound “Jacob Smith’s engaging study of spoken word LPs is as revelatory as it is welcome. No other book has so thoroughly explored a phenomenon that was unique to the 1950s and 1960s, when LPs were the only widely available medium that allowed consumers to enjoy repeated exposure to recorded material. —Krin Gabbard, author of Hotter Than That: The Trumpet, Jazz, and American Culture "Smith's work contains historical material that few scholars have studied and many people have never even heard of. ... The grouping of these unique case studies results in new connections to and between various performance styles, materials, and industries." —Susan Murray, author of Hitch Your Antenna to the Stars
