DESCRIPTION BOOK:

“When you die, it does not mean that you lose to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and the manner in which you live.” – Stuart Scott The fearless, intimate, and inspiring story behind ESPN anchor Stuart Scott’s unrelenting fight against cancer, with a foreword by Robin Roberts. Shortly before he passed away, on January 4, 2015, Stuart Scott completed work on this memoir. It was both a labor of love and a love letter to life itself. Not only did Stuart relate his personal story—his childhood in North Carolina, his supportive family, his athletic escapades, his on-the-job training as a fledgling sportscaster, his being hired and eventual triumphs at ESPN—he shared his intimate struggles to keep his story going. Struck by appendiceal cancer in 2007, Stuart battled this rare disease with an unimaginable tenacity and vigor. Countless surgeries, enervating chemotherapies, endless shuttling from home to hospital to office and back—Stuart continued defying fate, pushing himself through exercises and workout routines that kept him strong. He wanted to be there for his teenage daughters, Sydni and Taelor, not simply as their dad, but as an immutable example of determination and courage. Every Day I Fight is a saga of love, an inspiration to us all.

DESCRIPTION BOOK:

This is true story about real people is set in Edinburgh City and Dundee, where a petite Scottish Lassie called Rosie Gilmour, mother to Finlay Sinclair, receives news of the death of her son - who tragically has taken his own life by hanging. Rosie pretends her son is still alive by talking to him, for that takes away the unbearable pain of her loss. But once she begins to face up to the fact that Finlay is not coming back, her conversations become more of a challenge than she can handle. When memories of her past are triggered by everyday life events, they take her mind back and forth in time - back to her own childhood days in 1960, when she flirted with the fairground boys, and to the day she gave birth to Finlay - ''ME LADDIE''. Rosie's Scottish accent becomes more apparent whenever her emotions are heightened and she begins to recite poetry. She goes on to reveal doubts about her own self-worth and and how she re-unites her role as mother - a role she had denied herself for seven years prior to Finlay's death. Rosie learns how to forgive herself and how to accept her loss with using practical coping strategies that sometimes but not always work for her. Many voices of different natures and walks of life appear in Rosie's, story with each one offering a part of their own belief to try and console her in her misery - except that she turns her back on any advice or support offered. Rosie is convinced that she can cope with her loss on her own and "e;needs no help from anyone, thank you"e; - until a sweet, gentle, soft-spoken voice begins to travel with her throughout her ordeal, leaving her no other choice but to listen. Eventually moving to the countryside in Angus, Rosie finds the isolation gives her life a new meaning offering her the opportunity to re-value her belief's about her own self values and decides the time has come to give her son a memorial service and invite a chosen few dance companions whom she met on a regular basis in Edinburgh to honour this day. Rosie begins to accept she will never be the same person she once had been and shall never be again, believing now her journey through grief taught her many lessons making her a stronger and better person than she imagined she could ever be.

In short order he's hailed as the new Andy Warhol and becomes an overnight sensation-and a very wealthy man. Soon, images of his toilet bowls are on more t-shirts, mugs, and calendars than Edvard Munch's The Scream. His friend and mentor, Hugh Connelly, afraid that Mark is in danger of losing his "artistic soul," advises him to go back to Italy and reacquaint himself with the "old masters." In Venice, Mark falls in love with Alexandra, a beautiful art restorer, but it's a one-sided affair. One night, hoping to win her over, he climbs up on a roof to find out who painted her favorite fresco. He falls off the roof and wakes up in 15th century Venice where he meets an innkeeper named Francesca, who looks exactly like Alexandra. And it gets curiouser and curiouser from there. During his stay-which is sometimes zany and sometimes frightening-he meet his hero, Michelangelo, who teaches him the true meaning of art.

DESCRIPTION BOOK:

We’ve all been there: that make-it-or-break-it moment of our careers—on the brink of a deal, poised at the starting gate, under the spotlight waiting to speak or perform in front of our peers. At this point, where everything seems to be on the line, most of us experience one overriding reaction-fear-and this fear can have negative physical, mental, and emotional consequences on how well we do our job. Don Greene, Ph.D., a renowned sports psychologist, teacher at the Juilliard School, and "stress" coach to top executives and entertainers, has spent decades studying fear and its effect on performance. In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Greene shares the proven techniques he has used with Olympic athletes, Grand Prix drivers, the Vail Ski School, Golf Digest Schools, the New World Symphony, and Merrill Lynch traders to help them perform their best under pressure. In his years of working with Olympic and professional athletes, network news anchors, classical musicians, actors, dancers, trial attorneys, brokers, and CEOs, Dr. Greene discovered that there were certain commonalities in people's responses to high-pressure situations. Untrained, these individuals' reactions were allowing fear to take over and affect decision-making, poise, and display of skill. But Dr. Greene found that by applying methods such as the centering technique, these same people could work through their fear and perform better than ever before. Fight Your Fear and Win begins with a self-assessment performance survey that will allow you to pinpoint your own reactions to stress: how you handle distractions, how you are affected by nervousness, your mental outlook, your response to fear, and your ability to bounce back from failure. After completing this self-assessment, the book takes you through the seven essential skills required for optimal performance: 1.Determination 2.Energy 3.Perspective 4.Courage 5.Focus 6.Poise 7.Resilience Interspersed with true stories from Greene's wide variety of experiences training everyone from the San Diego S.W.A.T. team to singers at the Metropolitan Opera, each chapter includes a series of mental and physical exercises that will help you track your progress. This simple twenty-one-day plan will make a profound difference in the way you approach challenging situations, and allow you to think more clearly and creatively under pressure. Whether you are giving a closing argument in a courtroom, making a presentation at work, auditioning for a role, or stepping up to the first tee, Fight Your Fear and Win is the ultimate tool to conquering your fear and achieving success when you need it most.

DESCRIPTION BOOK:

For decades, traditional medicine had very little to offer for individuals suffering from multiple sclerosis and other autoimmune diseases. Today, medical science has brought us wave upon wave of immunomodulatory medications to try to slow disease progression. Unfortunately, these medications come with their own health- and life-threatening side effects. And sometimes, they just stop working. “Fighting the Dragon: How I Beat Multiple Sclerosis” is the story of one woman's thirty year battle with multiple sclerosis and what she did to reclaim her life when she realized she would need an assisted living facility within a few years. The book contains detailed descriptions of what worked and what did not, where she got the help she needed (and how the reader can locate these resources within his/her own community), and the logic behind the non-conventional therapies. “Fighting the Dragon” is a narrative of courage—courage driven by desperation, a story written by a patient who decided, when her neurologist told her, “You will never walk normally again,” that she would dance. "Fighting the Dragon" is also a book the MS patient can take to his/her physician . . . it contains well-researched, easy-to-follow guidelines for what to do and how. The information is also applicable to a wide range of other autoimmune conditions, cancers, and AIDS. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Excerpt: . . . if your car kept breaking down and the mechanic you took it to kept doing the same thing to fix it—but it did not stay fixed, you would question the mechanic's competence. Maybe the mechanic pulled out a technical manual. “See. I fixed it exactly as the manual said. This is the industry-approved way to solve this problem.” When the car broke down again a week later, would you be satisfied? Probably not. You might decide it is time to replace the car. But that might be too expensive. So, what to do? If you were smart, you would probably try to find a new mechanic. You might ask your friends who they would recommend. You might search on the Internet to see if other people had the same experience with their cars . . . and what caused the problem. You might telephone some repair shops to get some idea of what they thought the problem might be. If you found a new mechanic and that mechanic looked over the car and said, “I have a solution that is not in any industry-approved repair manuals, but it is safe and it works,”—would you walk away and go back to the first mechanic who never got it right? Why is your health worth any less than your car?

Ever since Malcolm James was a child, cold blooded murder has played a significant part in his life. Whether it be from both of his parents being brutally assassinated right in front of him, or having blood on his own hands, murder has been his reality. Constantly haunted and consumed by his own actions, the only thing stronger than Malcolm's thirst for blood, is his hunger for money and power! Flooding the crime ridden and gang infested inner city streets of Denver, Colorado with Cocaine and pounds of Kush, grindin, as his "Gang Green" squad of misfits commit robberies, mayhem and murder while on their way to the top. However, the sudden murder of Malcolm's friend and right hand man, not only cause the homicide rate to shoot through the roof, but also derails their mission. All while Malcolm battles with a dark secret brewing deep down inside, at which only "Tear Drop and Buds" are able to recognize and tame. Both OG's in tha game graduating to bosses of a mountain west and west coast black underworld syndicate, whom eventually put Malcolm on the payroll as a triggerman, which of course leads to more problems, money, women, and deadly consequences. Why Principle or Profit you ask? Because nine times outta ten every time a life is taken out in these streets, it's a direct result of one or the other. To profit is self explanatory; however, principle could be ones personal belief, or even a weak emotion like jealousy and greed, to killing over territory, a debt, turf, stripes, or other principles of the streets. At the end of the day we all gotta go, so which one are you willing to die for?

DESCRIPTION BOOK:

From award-winning poet Saeed Jones, How We Fight for Our Lives—winner of the Kirkus Prize and the Stonewall Book Award—is a “moving, bracingly honest memoir” (The New York Times Book Review) written at the crossroads of sex, race, and power. One of the best books of the year as selected by The New York Times; The Washington Post; NPR; Time; The New Yorker; O, The Oprah Magazine; Harper’s Bazaar; Elle; BuzzFeed; Goodreads; and many more. “People don’t just happen,” writes Saeed Jones. “We sacrifice former versions of ourselves. We sacrifice the people who dared to raise us. The ‘I’ it seems doesn’t exist until we are able to say, ‘I am no longer yours.’” Haunted and haunting, How We Fight for Our Lives is a stunning coming-of-age memoir about a young, black, gay man from the South as he fights to carve out a place for himself, within his family, within his country, within his own hopes, desires, and fears. Through a series of vignettes that chart a course across the American landscape, Jones draws readers into his boyhood and adolescence—into tumultuous relationships with his family, into passing flings with lovers, friends, and strangers. Each piece builds into a larger examination of race and queerness, power and vulnerability, love and grief: a portrait of what we all do for one another—and to one another—as we fight to become ourselves. An award-winning poet, Jones has developed a style that’s as beautiful as it is powerful—a voice that’s by turns a river, a blues, and a nightscape set ablaze. How We Fight for Our Lives is a one-of-a-kind memoir and a book that cements Saeed Jones as an essential writer for our time.

DESCRIPTION BOOK:

*Includes pictures *Explains the roles played by Tecumseh and William Henry Harrison before, during, and after the battle *Includes various accounts of what happened at the battle according to both sides *Includes a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents The Battle of Tippecanoe, fought on November 7, 1811 near present-day Lafayette, Indiana, involved forces of fewer than 2,000 Native American warriors and white soldiers, and only about 300 men were killed or wounded on both sides. Given those numbers, it's apparent that the battle was far from being a Saratoga or a Gettysburg in terms of its scale or significance as an historical turning point, yet it was one of the most important battles in shaping American history during the early 19th century. The battle also involved an epic confrontation between two important American figures: William Henry Harrison, who would become the 9th president of the United States by running on his success in the battle, and the Shawnee war chief Tecumseh, arguably the most famous Native American leader in American history. From the American Revolution up through the Battle of Tippecanoe, Native Americans in the Old Northwest (today's Midwestern states) had been putting up stout resistance to that region's settlement by white land speculators and settlers. Things came to a head when Tecumseh and his brother, the Prophet Tenskwatawa, spearheaded a movement in the region that greatly influenced the area's Native Americans. In 1806, Harrison began to publicly denounce Tenskwatawa to other tribal leaders, calling him a fraud and charlatan, but the Shawnee Prophet responded by accurately predicting a solar eclipse, which embarrassed Governor Harrison, and after this event, which tribal leaders took as a sign of Tenskwatawa's authenticity, his movement grew even more rapidly. By 1808, Tenskwatawa and his followers had moved west and founded a large, multi-tribal settlement near the confluence of the Tippecanoe and Wabash Rivers, called Prophetstown or Tippecanoe. Assisted by his brother Tecumseh, Tenskwatawa's settlement grew tremendously and eventually became the largest Native American settlement in the region. It also served as a Native American cultural center and provided a steady cadre of warriors ready to hear the Prophet's message that they should return to their ancestral lifestyles and force the white settlers and their culture out of their territory. Although accounts of the battle conflict, all agree that sentinels aroused the main body of the American troops when they detected Native American warriors attacking the Americans' perimeter from the south. The initial Native American attack struck the southern point of the defensive perimeter around 4:30 a.m. on November 7, 1811, and almost immediately the warriors rushed in among the American defenders manning that sector. Soldiers defending the southern side of the perimeter suffered the highest casualties, with the Yellow Jackets suffering a 30% casualty rate, but in fighting lasting about two hours Harrison's force of roughly 1,000, suffered only 62 dead and about 120 wounded. As the sun rose, the warriors began running low on ammunition, and the light revealed their small numbers, leading them to break off the attack and retreat towards Prophetstown. The battle was hardly a decisive victory, but at the end of the fighting the Americans still held their perimeter, allowing them to claim victory. While Tippecanoe was clearly not a total victory, and Native American resistance would continue through the War of 1812, the battle is widely considered the end of Tecumseh's War and did help bring about the decline of Native American ascendancy in the region. The Battle of Tippecanoe: The History and Legacy of the American Victory That Ended Tecumseh's War analyzes the background that led up to the battle and its aftermath.
