DESCRIPTION BOOK:

“A picaresque adventure and spiritual coming-of-age tale — On the Road crossed with Henderson the Rain King… Deeply affecting.” —Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times Longlisted for an Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction A captivating, often hilarious novel of family and wilderness from the bestselling author of The Circle, this is a powerful examination of our contemporary life and a rousing story of adventure. Josie and her children’s father have split up, she’s been sued by a former patient and lost her dental practice, and she’s grieving the death of a young man senselessly killed. When her ex asks to take the children to meet his new fiancée’s family, Josie makes a run for it, figuring Alaska is about as far as she can get without a passport. Josie and her kids, Paul and Ana, rent a rattling old RV named the Chateau, and at first their trip feels like a vacation: They see bears and bison, they eat hot dogs cooked on a bonfire, and they spend nights parked along icy cold rivers in dark forests. But as they drive, pushed north by the ubiquitous wildfires, Josie is chased by enemies both real and imagined, past mistakes pursuing her tiny family, even to the very edge of civilization. A tremendous new novel from the best-selling author of The Circle, Heroes of the Frontier is the darkly comic story of a mother and her two young children on a journey through an Alaskan wilderness plagued by wildfires and a uniquely American madness.

DESCRIPTION BOOK:

THE NEW YORK TIMES TOP 10 BESTSELLER 'The mirror image of Eggers's brilliantly dystopian The Circle... [A] state of the nation novel, cleansing the spirit and lifting the heart' Guardian A hilarious and heart-warming misadventure through modern America: it's time for the family vacation... Josie's life is falling apart - lawsuits raining down, her business down the drain and a feckless husband long gone - so she gathers up her two kids and lights out for the wilderness. The Alaskan wilderness, to be specific. This is a story about the trip of a lifetime. It involves one battered old RV, one highly sensitive eight year old boy, one fearless and hyperactive five year old girl, several forest fires, a large supply of pinot noir, and a deeply misguided sense of optimism. It may well be that things don't turn out quite as Josie expected - but then again, some of the best places in the world are found at the end of a road you didn't mean to take... Heroes of the Frontier is an uproariously funny portrait of modern America and the modern family, an entirely contemporary novel gleaming with Dave Eggers' trademark intelligence and originality.

Fess became a contract player with Warner Bros., appearing in small roles in several films, such as Springfield Rifle (1952), Island in the Sky, The Bounty Hunter, and Battle Cry. In 1954, he appeared as Great Dalton in the Jim Davis syndicated Western anthology series, Stories of the Century in the episode “The Dalton Brothers.” Walt Disney picked him over James Arness and other actors to star as Davy Crockett in a three-part mini series entitled Davy Crockett (1954–55), a tremendous hit that led to a merchandising frenzy for coonskin caps and all things Crockett. He also appeared on many television programs, and he composed and sang. Fess took to the stage in 1963, in a traveling production of Oklahoma! In 1964, Fess appeared in Daniel Boone, another television series, portraying another historic figure of America's frontier days. The action-adventure television series aired from September 24, 1964 to September 10, 1970 on NBC for 165 episodes and was one of the highest rated shows of its time. Fess was not only the star of the series but also the co-producer and director of five of its most popular episodes. William R. Chemerka has written an authorized biography, a respectful tribute to an amazing man, and the book also features thoughtful recollections from Fess’ family, friends, co-stars, and fans, and includes a number of never-before-published photographs. 416 pages. DESCRIPTION BOOK:

Music in the Western: Notes from the Frontier presents essays from both film studies scholars and musicologists on core issues in western film scores: their history, their generic conventions, their operation as part of a narrative system, their functioning within individual filmic texts and their ideological import, especially in terms of the western’s construction of gender, sexuality, race and ethnicity. The Hollywood western is marked as uniquely American by its geographic setting, prototypical male protagonist and core American values. Music in the Western examines these conventions and the scores that have shaped them. But the western also had a resounding international impact, from Europe to Asia, and this volume distinguishes itself by its careful consideration of music in non-Hollywood westerns, such as Ravenous and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly and in the “easterns” which influenced them, such as Yojimbo. Other films discussed include Wagon Master, High Noon, Calamity Jane, The Big Country, The Unforgiven, Dead Man, Wild Bill, There Will Be Blood and No Country for Old Men. Contributors Ross Care Corey K. Creekmur Yuna de Lannoy K. J.
