DESCRIPTION BOOK:

One of The New Yorker's "Books We Loved in 2017" A Grace Paley Reader compiles a selection of Paley’s writing across genres, showcasing her breadth of work as well as her extraordinary insight and brilliant economy of words. "A writer like Paley," writes George Saunders, “comes along and brightens language up again, takes it aside and gives it a pep talk, sends it back renewed, so it can do its job, which is to wake us up.” Best known for her inimitable short stories, Grace Paley was also an enormously talented essayist and poet, as well as a fierce activist. She was a tireless member of the antiwar movement, the civil rights movement, the tenants’ rights movement, the anti-nuclear-power movement, and the Women’s Pentagon Action, among other causes, and proved herself to be a passionate citizen of each of her communities—New York City and rural Vermont.

Together Still
Author: Yves Bonnefoy
Release: 2017
Editor: SB-The French List
Pages: 133
ISBN: 0857424246
Language: en
Available for:

DESCRIPTION BOOK:

The international community of letters mourned the recent death of Yves Bonnefoy, universally acclaimed as one of France's greatest poets of the last half century. A prolific author, he was often considered a candidate for the Nobel Prize and published a dozen major collections of poetry in verse and prose, several books of dream-like tales, and numerous studies of literature and art. His oeuvre has been translated into scores of languages, and he himself was a celebrated translator of Shakespeare, Yeats, Keats, and Leopardi. Together Still is his final poetic work, composed just months before his death. The book is nothing short of a literary testament, addressed to his wife, his daughter, his friends, and his readers throughout the world. In these pages, he ruminates on his legacy to future generations, his insistence on living in the present, his belief in the triumphant lessons of beauty, and, above all, his courageous identification of poetry with hope.

Author: Cyril Wong
Release: 2020-04-15
Editor: Pride List
Pages: 160
ISBN: 0857427423
Language: en
Available for:

DESCRIPTION BOOK:

This volume of poems by Cyril Wong, one of the leading figures of poetry in Singapore, reflects the many ways in which love between two men can unfold, balancing emotional outpourings with meditations on the nature of relationships. The poetry punctures the sometimes oppressive reality of life in a city that is hypermodern yet far from free and, through twists and turns, ultimately lifts the reader to a place beyond pleasure and pain. Sensual, anecdotal and, of course, confessional, Infinity Diary charts an evolution in the work of one of Asia's most intimate English-language poets.

Squandered Advice

Squandered Advice
Author: Ilse Aichinger
Release: 2022-03-22
Editor: Unknown
Pages: 112
ISBN: 0857429787
Language: en
Available for:

DESCRIPTION BOOK:

The first English translation of a major work of postwar German poetry. Austrian writer Ilse Aichinger (1921-2016) was a member of the Gruppe 47 writers' group, which sought to renew German-language literature after World War II. From a wide-ranging literary career that encompassed all genres, Squandered Advice was Aichinger's sole poetry collection. The book gathers poems written over several decades, yet Aichinger's poetic voice remains remarkably consistent, frequently addressing us or a third party, often in the imperative, with many poems written in the form of a question. Even though they use free verse throughout, the poems are still tightly structured, often around sounds or repetition, using spare language. Phrases are often fragmentary, torn off and juxtaposed as if in a collage. Isolated and haunting, the images are at times everyday, at other times surreal, suggesting dreams or memories. The tone ranges from reassuring and gentle to disjointed and disturbing, but the volume was carefully composed by the author into an integral whole, not chronological but following its own poetic logic. This new translation makes Aichinger's critically acclaimed book, which has inspired poets the German-speaking world for decades, available to English-language readers for the first time.

Release: 2009
Editor: New Directions Publishing
Pages: 272
ISBN: 0811218090
Language: en

DESCRIPTION BOOK:

The most comprehensive selection of poems in English by Latin America's legendary poet-activist, Ernesto Cardenal. "Pluriverse: New and Selected Poems" charts the life-work of the celebrated poet Ernesto Cardenal--"one of the world's major poets" ("Choice") and "the preeminent poet of Central America today" ("Library Journal"). Follow Cardenal's poetic development across six decades, from the early exteriorismo poems and romantic epigrams of the early 1950s, to the increasingly spiritual and political verse he wrote as priest and activist (including his classic revolutionary documentary poem "Zero Hour"), to the shorter victory and ecology poems, and elegies to fallen Sandinistas, and on to the cosmic-mystical-scientific dimensions of his later work. "Here they are--" editor Jonathan Cohen writes in his Introduction, "to gladden your heart and enrich your soul."

Come Take a Gentle Stab

Come Take a Gentle Stab
Author: Salim Barakat
Release: 2021-09-15
Editor: Unknown
Pages: 132
ISBN: 0857428888
Language: en
Available for:

DESCRIPTION BOOK:

Introduces renowned Kurdish-Syrian writer Salim Barkat to an English audience for the first time, with translated selections from his most acclaimed works of poetry. Although Salim Barakat is one of the most renowned and respected contemporary writers in Arabic letters, he remains virtually unknown in the English-speaking world. This first collection of his poetry in English, representing every stage of his career, remedies that startling omission. Come, Take a Gentle Stab features selections from his most acclaimed works of poetry, including excerpts from his book-length poems, rendered into an English that captures the exultation of language for which he is famous. A Kurdish-Syrian man, Barakat chose to write in Arabic, the language of cultural and political hegemony that has marginalized his people. Like Paul Celan, he mastered the language of the oppressor to such an extent that the course of the language itself has been compelled to bend to his will. Barakat pushes Arabic to a point just beyond its linguistic limits, stretching those limits. He resists coherence, but never destroys it, pulling back before the final blow. What results is a figurative abstraction of struggle, as alive as the struggle itself. And always beneath the surface of this roiling water one can glimpse the deep currents of ancient Kurdish culture.

ISBN: 0857425447
Language: en

DESCRIPTION BOOK:

Iraqi poet Salah Al Hamdani has lived a remarkable life. The author of some forty books in French and Arabic, he began life as a child laborer, with little or no education. As a political prisoner under Saddam Hussein, he learned to read and write Arabic; once he was released form prison, he continued to work against the regime, ultimately, at age twenty-one, choosing exile in Paris. He now writes in French, but he remains a poet of exile, of memory, wounded by the loss of his homeland and those dear to him. This landmark collection gathers thirty-five years of his writings, from his first volume in Arabic, Memory of Embers, to his latest collection, written originally in French, For You I Dream. It offers English-language readers their first substantial overview of Al Hamdani's work, fired by the fight against injustice and shot through with longing for the home to which he can never return.

An Infusion of Violets

An Infusion of Violets
Author: Nancy Naomi Carlson
Release: 2019-05
Editor: Unknown
Pages: 80
ISBN: 0857426451
Language: en
Available for:

DESCRIPTION BOOK:

Using the same musical sense of language she applies to her translations, Nancy Naomi Carlson masterfully interprets herself in An Infusion of Violets. The sometimes erotic, sometimes melancholy landscapes she creates as the self-appointed sitar's "ragged throat, pitched / between here and when, / caught in quartertones," take our breath away. Carlson describes an interior world where tears can produce "so much salt a body floats away," where "music tuned to loss descends with rain," and where hope is placed in the "kill-cure." Here we encounter Carlson's ex-husbands and luminaries such as Rachmaninoff and Monet, among others. Filled with striking images and sensuous language, An Infusion of Violets is an evocative mix of formal and free-verse poems.
